The latest trick in the healthy food game

I've been noticing that a lot of protein bars and other purportedly healthy products contain an ingredient called "palm kernel oil" or "fractionated palm kernel oil." I was curious about this, so I did a google search. Here's an article that shed some light on this increasingly popular ingredient.

More good news about obesity

Yeah, I'm being a tad sarcastic. Here's to swelling waistlines and the consequentially swelling insurance premiums we'll all enjoy.

How pervasive are the golden arches?

Every parent should read this article, and not just for your kids, but for yourself. I do want my clients to learn discipline when it comes to eating, but I acknowledge how difficult that can be in a culture ruled by slick advertising.

I strongly recommend everyone take the time to read the book "Fast Food Nation," by Eric Schlosser. This book taught me a lot about the fast food industry -- enough to make me stop eating fast food for the most part -- and not just because it's garbage. There's so much more involved, from the injustice to the workers on the killing floors to the who-knows-what in the fries. I must acknowledge that I am an omnivore, so I can't get too self righteous. Any of us who eat mass-produced meat are contributing to a pretty evil system, and unfortunately, that includes me.

Forgive my soapbox surfing. Please check out the book if you get a chance (the movie doesn't do it justice -- not in the least).

Here's a link to a very interesting story about how advertising can affect children.
